Overview of class

This introductory course offers an examination of the major movements in the history of concert and social dance from the perspective of the United States, with an emphasis on performances of the 21st century. For example, considerations of popular culture and dance in the museum; feminist foundations of modern dance; contemporary performance idioms that involve the presence of the body. The course prepares for students a curricular foundation in critical dance studies: the significance of corporeality/embodiment, critical theories as applied to dance practices, cultural and historical contextual knowledges, movement description and dance analysis.

Enrollment Requirements: This class is restricted to Dance majors/minors & Music Theatre Certificate students during pre-registration, after which time enrollment will be open to everyone who has taken the prerequisites (when pre-reqs are applicable) or have placed in the level
