Overview of class
Course Purpose: This course is designed to reinforce foundational concepts of
vocal production, including breath, anatomy, and resonance, while developing
practical teaching skills. Students will gain hands-on experience working with
beginner singers, learning to assess vocal strengths and needs through critical
listening and observation. Emphasis is placed on applying principles of posture,
breath management, resonance, registration, and articulation to address technical
challenges across a range of vocal styles. Through guided practice and discussion,
students will also begin to shape their own teaching methodology and pedagogical
philosophy.
Registration Requirements
The student must satisfy one of these prerequisites to register for this class:
-Currently pursuing a Master of Music degree in Voice Performance or Music Education
or a Doctor of Music degree in Vocal Performance
Learning Objectives
● Apply core principles of vocal technique—including posture, breath management,
resonance, registration, and articulation—to effectively diagnose and address technical issues
in beginning singers.
● Demonstrate critical listening and observational skills to accurately assess a singer's
strengths, challenges, and developmental needs.
● Select and implement appropriate vocal exercises with clear pedagogical intent,
understanding how specific exercises support particular technical goals.
● Identify and evaluate suitable repertoire for beginning singers, based on vocal development,
style, and pedagogical value
Teaching Method
● Interactive discussions of assigned readings to deepen understanding of teaching concepts and tools
● Targeted lectures that clarify key principles of vocal production, teaching strategies, and vocal health
● Supervised, in-class group teaching sessions with beginner volunteer singers, providing hands-on teaching experience in a supportive environment.
● Observation of master teachers (3 sessions) to expose students to varied teaching styles, and techniques
● Instructor feedback and evaluation following teaching demonstrations, offering specific guidance for growth
● Peer feedback and collaborative reflection after in-class teaching, fostering shared learning and constructive critique
● Student reports on pedagogical topics of their choice, with approval
● Ongoing class discussions
Evaluation Method
● Active participation in discussions that reflects thoughtful engagement with weekly
reading assignments.
● 10-minute "Book report" on an approved topic gleaned articles from the Journal of
Singing or other peer-reviewed journals or from book chapters from Instructor's Library
● Completion of 3 Lesson Observations
