Overview of class

This course aims to prepare students for successful piano teaching at the collegiate level. We will focus on all aspects of teaching piano to the adult as a piano student and explore various teaching approaches, strategies, and appropriate materials.

Registration Requirements

This is a doctoral level course. Please contact the instructor (lam.wong@northwestern.edu) to receive recommendations prior to registering for the course.

Learning Objectives

Private lessons, piano clinics, and masterclasses for advanced non-majors will provide opportunities for students to hone their instructional skills as a teaching artist. Piano group classes will expose them to effective teaching strategies for class piano.

Teaching Method

A combination of seminars, workshops, readings, discussions, observations, and supervised teaching will expand students' knowledge of piano pedagogy and help them acquire a better understanding of their own strengths and weaknesses as a teacher as they develop and refine their teaching method.

Evaluation Method

Students will be evaluated for their teaching in terms of effectiveness, consistency, quality preparation, and thoughtful assessment of teaching results, in addition to presentations, teaching demonstrations, other written assignments, observations, contributions to seminar discussions, and a final project.
