Overview of class
This course is designed for graduate students in music performance, music education, or other
music majors interested in teaching studio music lessons in a variety of contexts. A strong
emphasis will be placed on best teaching practices for studio teaching contexts, from both
research and practitioner perspectives. Topics will include principles of good teaching in a one-
to-one environment, strategies for preparing for lessons, student motivation and affect,
teaching large groups with and through performance, reflections on lesson observations,
supervised teaching experiences, and special topics as determined in collaboration between
the students and instructors.
