Overview of class

The Eurovision Song Contest is one of the longest-running television programs in the world, bringing together nations through music since 1956. What can we learn about how people engage with music, and our own relationship with music, from this event? This course explores the Eurovision Song Contest - a pop music competition hosted by European nations - as a lens for understanding how music functions across cultures as a form of expression, identity, political statement, and cultural bridge. Through analysis and discussion of performances, students will develop vocabulary and frameworks for discussing music in accessible ways, examine how cultural and political contexts shape musical expression, and reflect on their own musical experiences.
