Overview of class

Music possesses the remarkable ability to emotionally connect with a listener regardless of identity, background, or language. This course offers a foundational survey of music through a historical, cultural, and social lens, introducing students to how music functions as this aural phenomenon. Along with exploring a diverse range of genres and practices across geographical boundaries from the Middle Ages to the present day, students will learn to engage critically with various techniques, forms, and styles through in-class discussions, listening assignments, and written reflections. No prior musical knowledge or experience is required, as the course aims to teach students how to listen and articulate their reactions to what they hear.
