Overview of class
This course provides a broad overview of the development of rock music in the UK and the US from the 1950s to the present. The first half of the course covers early key movements in the history of rock including the British Invasion, the 1960s Counterculture, and the New Wave of British Heavy Metal; the second half introduces the developments of various rock styles after the 1970s including prog rock, glam rock, hard rock, thrash metal, grunge, and alternative rock. The course will also pay attention to the development of the Chicago rock scene. The assignments include creating students' own playlists based on each week's lectures and a final project where the students can: explore artists or subgenres that aren't covered in the class, explore the rock scene in other cultures, or further explore the Chicago rock scene. In addition to the required material, supplemental materials such as listening, readings, and movie links will be posted on Canvas.
