Overview of class
This course introduces the fundamentals of Western tonal music, including: (1) pitch and notation (pitch, staff notation, scales, intervals); (2) tonality and harmony (keys, harmonic practices); and (3) rhythm and structure (rhythm, meter, phrase organization). Through listening activities, analytical work, and brief composition exercises, students will build practical skills for understanding how tonal music functions and how its principles continue to influence the ways we hear, interpret, and think about music today.
