Overview of class
In this course, we will explore the innovative ways composers and performers have connected musical expression and the delight of laughter in play since the Renaissance. We will study how the improvised Italian theatre, commedia dell'arte, influenced the beginnings of opera and, in turn, many other musical art forms across time: vaudeville, musical theatre, drag, Second City's iconic revue style, and beyond. When confronted with failure or obstacles, how did these artists change their perspective, and thus, change the outcome of their work? This class will challenge you to do the same, to plug in your creativity, to fail publicly, to collaborate, to think and express differently, to play (yes, play as an adult!), to say, "Yes, and…" and so much more. Class will be taught through a combination of readings, listening/watching assignments, in-class discussions, collaborative projects and in-class exploration of music and comedy. There is no required textbook for this class, but you will be expected to participate fully in in-class activities and any notes must be taken by hand (no computers or electronic devices in class, so please bring a paper notebook and pencil). You will be graded based on in-class participation and preparation, creative thinking, attending and evaluating events outside of class, and a final project and presentation.
