Overview of class
This course examines Brazilian history and culture through a musical perspective, studying not only the history of Brazilian music, but also the historical events that have shaped and influenced its development and production. We will explore musical genres from various regions of Brazil, such as samba, bossa nova, baião, forró, and MPB, highlighting the country's rich musical and cultural diversity. Additionally, there will be guest speakers from Brazil who will share their perspectives on the country's music and culture, and the course will include performance workshops featuring choro, a traditional street style rooted in Brazilian culture, and samba, a widely celebrated dance style.
