Overview of class
Students enrolled in GEN MUS 170 will not only gain an introduction to music, but also begin to learn its ever-changing meaning for people across different countries, cultures, and historical periods. As we peruse major trends in Western music history during the quarter, the question "why does music matter?" will be thoroughly investigated throughout the course. In addition to weekly listening playlists, readings - both contemporary and historical - will shed further light on the world of music that has been cultivated for millennia. By the end of the course, students will have experience in thinking critically about sound and music, learning the important musical parameters of melody, harmony, texture, form, rhythm, and meter. Weekly listening assignments accompanied by journal entries will guide the student outside of the classroom. Three quizzes and a final cumulative paper will serve as the main graded components of the course. Students of any musical background - some or none - are welcome.
