Overview of class

IMC 453: Media Decisions is the capstone course in the Media Sequence. The course challenges students to synthesize and apply learning from across the IMC program and the Media Sequence to make informed media decisions and defend their recommendations when there is no single right answer.

Throughout the quarter, students will revisit foundational concepts from earlier coursework while exploring contemporary issues, emerging practices, and industry perspectives that deepen their understanding of media decision-making. These experiences will strengthen students' ability to evaluate alternatives, navigate ambiguity, and make informed recommendations.

A central component of the course is a corporate-sponsored team project that provides an opportunity to apply course concepts to a real-world business challenge. Individual assignments and reflection activities will ensure that each student also demonstrates personal mastery of the subject matter.

Weekly class sessions will focus on specific topics relevant to effective media decision-making. Each session will combine review of foundational concepts with new perspectives, contemporary issues, and application to the course project. Dedicated work-session time will allow teams to apply the week's learning, collaborate with peers, and receive feedback from the instructor as their thinking evolves. Outside of class, students will engage with additional resources, reflect on their personal growth and mastery of the subject matter, and work with their teams to develop recommendations for the final presentation. The course culminates with a team presentation of the corporate-sponsored project and an individual reflection on a contemporary media issue that challenges students to answer the question, "What would you do?"
