Overview of class
Medill Explores Data Storytelling is a one-week immersion during which you will explore various geocentric data sets and visualize the stories they tell in and around New York City. With its unique character as a bustling metropolis generating a wealth of real-time economic, transportation, commercial, and cultural data, you will develop the knowledge, understanding, and skills in data storytelling necessary to accelerate insights that will help guide a NYC-centric integrated marketing campaign.
Leveraging learnings and models from those who have taken IMC460 and IMC461, you will be immersed in real-world NYC datasets and visit institutions and organizations that leverage data visualization to help them make near and real-time decisions. You will leverage this data to tell your own stories that provide insights to help market a product, service or event.
In a short period of time, you will be exposed to how to apply data patterns and analysis to narrative structures (which form the building blocks of any data story), practice insight extraction and visualization techniques (to make data tangible), and gain hands-on exposure to data storytelling applications.
