Overview of class
Design is a core part of Chicago's identity. The city is known for its art, architecture, independent fashion, and socially conscious creativity. Chicago became the epicenter of fashion in the late 19th century when Sears, Montgomery Ward, and Spiegel, all headquartered in Chicago, brought fashion to American homes across the country long before retail or online shopping. The week will explore the modern descendants of that remarkable mercantilism. Today Chicago blossoms with emerging designers. It is the birthplace of improvisation in theatre, along with dozens of other theatre productions on any one night. The city is home to one of the world's great ballet companies and is a foundational city for jazz and music festivals. Downtown is home to one of the world's great art museums, with the largest collection of Impressionists outside Europe. Chicago revolutionized city architecture with the birth of the skyscraper, and its lakefront is the envy of many cities. Design is woven into the city's identity.
We will talk to the marketers and leaders of those who are involved in the design, arts, and fashion in Chicago and consider how products and services grow and gain value in today's fast-paced, high-tech world.
