Overview of class

This course will introduce the major categories of psychological disorders and related research findings. Goals/topics include encouraging critical evaluation of the DSM system of classification; exploring theories about the causes of mental disorders and how these theories have changed throughout recent history; considering ethical and social issues involved in the diagnosis and treatment of psychological disorders; developing critical thinking skills through the study of several controversial issues in abnormal psychology; and emphasizing the human face of psychological distress through case studies, readings, and videos.

This class will be taught through a combination of synchronous and asynchronous methods. From 3-5pm (Mon/Wed), we will meet synchronously via Zoom for a combination of lecture and discussion/group activities. Two hours per week of asynchronous activities will also be required. These will include videos of lecture on additional topics, Podcasts, and other activities. The two hours per week of asynch work are in addition to assigned readings for the course. Grades will be based on take-home exams and in-class assignments/discussions. You must attend class live via Zoom in order to earn credit for in-class assignments and discussions. This class was not designed for students to take as a fully asynchronous course.
