Overview of class
This capstone course provides students with an opportunity to design, execute, and present an original applied research project that synthesizes skills and knowledge developed across the social science major. Working independently with structured guidance, students move from an initial area of interest to a focused research question, conduct a targeted review of relevant literature, design and implement a feasible research strategy, and analyze empirical data using qualitative, quantitative, or mixed methods.
The course emphasizes practical research judgment: selecting workable questions, making disciplined methodological choices under time constraints, and translating findings into clear, professional formats. Students produce a polished research brief and recorded presentation intended for audiences beyond the classroom, such as employers, community partners, or graduate programs. Throughout the quarter, students also refine a professional ePortfolio that curates prior coursework and highlights applied research, analytical, and communication skills.
By the end of the course, students will have completed a substantive capstone project that demonstrates their ability to apply social science thinking to real-world problems, communicate evidence-based insights clearly, and reflect critically on their development as emerging social science professionals.
