Overview of class
This course is an introduction to the study and structure of film and other audiovisual media that explores both film techniques and grammar. We will define and examine the expressive and aesthetic power of the basic elements of moving image. Specifically, the course will investigate, across a variety of different media, the fundamentals of cinematography, especially the shot and its composition, mise-en-scène, editing and sound. We will also discuss film and television narratives and genre conventions as well as documentary and experimental filmmaking. In addition to synchronous lecture and discussion, there will also be asynchronous screenings available on Canvas each week.
Learning Objectives
At the end of this course, students will be able to:
• Identify the formal elements of different media forms
• Understand the film and television narratives and the concept of "medium specificity," that is, the conventions and formal elements that make the kinds of media produced in and for these varied formats distinct and recognizable
• Apply the critical tools required for accurate analysis of the moving image
