Overview of class
Negotiation and Conflict Management is a practical, skills-focused course designed to help students become more effective communicators, leaders, and strategic decision-makers. In today's professional environment, communication professionals frequently navigate competing interests, organizational tensions, and high-stakes conversations. This course teaches students how to analyze conflict, understand power dynamics, and design effective negotiation strategies across a variety of settings — from workplace and business negotiations to media, politics, and intercultural communication. Students will also learn how to manage difficult conversations, address emotions and bias, and use mediation and face-saving strategies to move conflicts toward productive outcomes.
Through real-world cases and applied exercises, students will develop practical negotiation and conflict management skills that are highly valuable across careers in strategic communication, marketing, leadership, consulting, and organizational communication. By the end of the course, students will be better prepared to influence outcomes, manage disagreements constructively, and communicate effectively in complex professional environments — skills that are increasingly essential for success in today's dynamic and collaborative workplace.
