Overview of class

Gender in Latin America's Indigenismo

In this course, we will consider representative examples of the literary and political traditions known as Indianismo and/or Indigenismo, both of which were popular in Latin America's nineteenth and twentieth century, respectively. In the first half of the course, we will establish the colonial origins of the gender binary and its implementation as a tool of colonial dominance through theoretical approaches common in the study of gender and sexuality. In the final half of the course, we will interrogate indigenista expression in policy, literature, and/or film to find the traces of embedded gender logics. Please contact the instructor if you do not possess reading knowledge in Spanish before enrolling. This course will be taught in English.
