Overview of class

Introduction to the theory and practice of Spanish sounds and phonology. Articulation and production, classification and description, combination and syllabification, sonority sequencing, and prevalent dialects. Introduction to basic principles of ethnographic research, data collection, and analysis. This course is conducted in Spanish. Prerequisite: Students must currently be enrolled in or have passed SPANISH 200-0 or 204-0, OR have an AP score of 5 for heritage students, or an AP of 5 in both Spanish Language and Literature exams for non-heritage students, or sufficient score on the Spanish Language Placement Exam.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, students will:
• be able to identify the human vocal apparatus with its resonating cavities and speech articulators.
• know all of the Spanish phonemes and be able to describe and classify them, as well as the major Spanish allophones.
• understand phonological processes including prosodic stress, syllabification, and sonority sequencing.
• have command of the concepts and linguistic terminology to talk about Spanish phonetics and phonology.
• be able to transcribe Spanish utterances using Spanish allophones and the International Phonetic Alphabet.
• have improved their spelling, accentuation, and pronunciation through study, practice, and analysis.
• know the unique patterns of some of the more prevalent dialectal variations of Spanish.
• be able to analyze phonetic data for individual and dialectal variations and effectively report their findings.
• begin to consider how phonetic variation affects identity, access, and other real-world topics.
have basic experience conducting an ethnographic interview and collecting phonetic data.

Enrollment Requirements

Enrollment Requirements: Registration for Majors and Minors in either Spanish or Portuguese until the end of preregistration, after which time enrollment will be open to everyone who has taken the prerequisite. Prerequisite: Must be enrolled in or have passed SPANISH 200-0 or SPANISH 204-0, have an AP score of 5 for heritage students, an AP of 5 in the Spanish Language and Literature exams for non-heritage students, or Spanish Language Placement Exam score.
