Black Spain: Anti-racism and Cultural Change

This course will examine Afro-Spanish cultural production from the 1990s to the present. Students will delve into the Black experience in Spain through the analysis of literature, podcasts, social media, film, performances, music, as well as theoretical texts. Prerequisite: 1 course from SPANISH 250-0, SPANISH 251-0, SPANISH 260-0, or SPANISH 261-0.

Learning Objectives

This course is in the Foundational Discipline-Literature and Arts category. As such, throughout this course, students will:
1. Gain awareness of the social, political, and cultural factors influencing, and being influenced by, cultural expression, the relationships between the writer, the state,and the public, and the potentials of literature to challenge or affirm social and cultural norms.
2. Engage with theoretical texts concerning race, ethnicity, and identity.
3. Explore how art & literature reveals cultural differences and continuities, serving as both an instrument of power and an instrument of emancipation.
4. Learn how to question notions of national identity.
5. Produce persuasive interpretations of literary texts through class participation, oral presentations, and writing assignments.
6. Improve their written Spanish.
7. Improve their spoken Spanish

Enrollment Requirements

Enrollment Requirements: Registration for Majors and Minors in either Spanish or Portuguese until the end of preregistration, after which time enrollment will be open to everyone who has taken the prerequisite. Prerequisite: 1 course from SPANISH 250-0, SPANISH 251-0, SPANISH 260-0, or SPANISH 261-0
