Overview of class

This course is devoted to a careful consideration of one book, Tolstoy's War and Peace, as we come to appreciate why it is often considered the world's greatest novel.

Paying close attention to the text, we will examine Tolstoy's psychological, moral, and aesthetic insights. We will try to understand why his original ideas, which challenge orthodoxies of his day and ours, have proven so influential.

If the class is successful, students will learn to appreciate what great literature has to offer and want to read more of it.
