Overview of class

Elementary Portuguese is a beginning course in Portuguese language and culture designed to develop all four language skills—speaking, listening, reading, and writing—through the three modes of communication: interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational. While learning the language, students will be introduced primarily to Brazil and its people, and will also explore aspects of Portugal and other Lusophone countries. By the end of the course, students will be able to carry out basic communicative tasks, participate in simple conversations, and interact on topics such as personal information, preferences, daily activities, and immediate needs. Classes are conducted in Portuguese and emphasize active participation, with dynamic and interactive exchanges among students. After completing this course, students may continue their studies by enrolling in the PORT 115-1-2 sequence.
