Overview of class

Coming of Age in Latinx Studies: Scholars, Writers, and Artists on Growing Up and Growing Old

This seminar foregrounds age as a social and analytical category in examinations of Latina, Latino, and Latinx everyday life. Students may engage with historical and fictional narratives, ethnographic studies, nonfiction essays, short stories, poetry, visual art, and popular culture to question assumptions about lifecycle scripts, specifically regarding how individuals and communities grow up and grow old. Discussions will consider how social, political, and economic dimensions of place have affected life trajectories in certain communities, as well as how other categories of social difference shape ideas about age and age relations.

• Through readings and other course materials, discussion, and writing assignments, students will explore age and the experience of aging as a physical process as well as a historical and socio-cultural phenomenon.

Students will also examine Latinxs/as/os within the broader rubric of racial and ethnic studies, and Latinxs/as/os shared and distinct experiences with other racialized communities.
