Overview of class

Global Academic Freedom: Student Advocacy Seminar

This undergraduate seminar centers on a hands-on project in collaboration with the Scholars at Risk (SAR) Network, a non-profit initiative working globally to protect scholars who are threatened, displaced or imprisoned for their academic work. Students will work in groups to devise an advocacy campaign for two scholars who are currently wrongfully imprisoned abroad and use this campaign as an opportunity to conduct human rights monitoring and research. The class will also explore the meaning and stakes of academic freedom today, both globally and in the U.S., and its connection to broader questions of human rights and justice. Through immersive advocacy work, students can expect to develop skills such as building partnerships and doing community outreach, conducting issue-based research, creating persuasive content to influence public opinion, engaging elected officials, and developing emotional intelligence towards diverse perspectives and experiences.
