Overview of class
This course introduces students to some of the major historical and historiographical questions that have shaped the field of Modern European history. What is the role of revolution? What is the role of nationalism? Which national histories have been deemed to stand in for something called "Europe," and which have been deemed "peculiar"? How has attention to European imperialism changed our understanding of what it means to study Europe? What is the future of European history? Students will end the term with a better sense of where their own interests might fit into the whole.
