Overview of class
The Marvel Cinematic University (MCU) is a series of superhero films featuring characters from American comic books that has become one of the highest grossing franchises of all time. A distinguishing feature of the MCU is that each installment relies on multiple types of intertextual reference (to other texts and/or movies) to make sense, convey meaning, and create a world in which there are multiple intersecting storylines, characters, histories, and interactions. Although the MCU is not the first work of art/literature to rely on intertextuality, it does so in a unique and intentional way—and on a grander scale.
This course draws on key concepts from semiotics (the study of signs, symbols, and meaning-making) and linguistic anthropology (the study of language in social and cultural context) to analyze the patterns, rhythms, interconnective tissue, and intertextual tapestry of the MCU. With a focus on character arcs, plot lines, locations, verbal and nonverbal interactions between characters, the depth of their individual and shared histories, scores and soundtracks, we explore how meaning is created and communicated within and across films in this shared universe. Major assignments include weekly readings, weekly viewings, weekly discussion forum posts, 2 short papers, and a final project. Permission of the instructor required.

Learning Objectives
One objective of the course is to operationalize key concepts from semiotics and linguistic anthropology and conduct a grounded analysis of intertextuality within and across selected films from the MCU. A second objective of the course is to demonstrate that all meaning is made within specific social and cultural contexts.
