Overview of class

In this seminar, our goal is to develop our understanding of diversity in psychological science. The hope is that we can separate the truth and the hype in the context of diversity, to better understand both why diversity is such a big part of public discourse, and why there might also be backlash toward the concept. We will attempt to understand diversity in psychological science through an understanding of its historical absence, the way lacking it shapes theory and practice in psychology, and the value of diversity in science (and society) broadly.

Learning Objectives

Throughout the course, students will: • Develop a deeper understanding of the concept of diversity as it relates to psychological science • Think about ways to incorporate diversity into our own scholarship • Learn strategies about how to introduce topics related to diversity into our teaching • Develop strategies for conversing about diversity with people who do not value it
