Overview of class
In this hybrid theory-practice course, students will engage critically with varied historical and theoretical models for dramaturgically grounded theatrical translation and dive into the practical implications of these theories, with the plays of Anton Chekhov as a primary case study. In the latter portion of the class, they will generate their own creative translations of theatrical texts of their choice. The course's aims are to build critical context for theatrical translation and to give students the practical skills to begin building a portfolio of work that allows them to expand meaningfully beyond the dominant Anglo-centric focus of much US theatre. Students must have at least a high intermediate knowledge of any non-English language. No previous translation experience is required. Open to undergraduate and graduate students across the university.
