Overview of class

Peering Under the Black Veil: Traditional Japanese Puppetry Techniques and Contemporary Puppet Performance

This course will introduce the history, cultural significance, and application of Japanese traditional puppetry through movement training and hands on practice with traditional and non-traditional puppet figures. Students will train in these techniques with puppeteer Tom Lee and learn elements of traditional Japanese dance and calligraphy to give the work larger context. The course will conclude with a visit by Tom Lee's teacher, Japanese master puppeteer Koryū Nishikawa V from Japan, and a presentation of the work from the semester for the larger NU community.
