Overview of class
This course is a hybrid scene study-history/lit/crit course designed to explore the richness of contemporary Latiné Theatre in the United States. The first 6-7 weeks of the course is spent on close readings of a wide spectrum of Latiné plays, with class discussion about their production history, their impact on the broader American Theatre, and conversations with some of the playwrights via Zoom. The last several weeks of the quarter are devoted to scene study and monologue work from a cross section of the plays and are chosen by the student.
CONTENT WARNING: Several of the plays in this course deal with traumatic themes and situations. The history of Latin America is steeped in trauma born out of "La Conquista". Art is memory and by its very nature is a chronicler of injustice.
The class will culminate in final scene and monologue performances, and a 2-4-page critical reflective paper that engages a shared theme across two plays of the students' choice from the reading list
