Overview of class
This course builds on the concepts and techniques of sound design for picture and introduces the world of 5.1 surround sound mixing. Advanced techniques in automation, bussing, editing, and mixing will be covered. Students entering the class should have basic knowledge in Pro Tools, sound recording and sound design techniques.

Learning Objectives
Understand technical requirements for sound mixing in theatrical 5.1 surround sound and stereo exhibition, including deliverables and loudness specifications
Critically engage with the historical pathways to multi-channel sound mixing for picture
Evaluate sound mixes from indie and industry level films
Create editing and mixing templates for use outside for future use beyond the course
Mix in 5.1 surround sound
Class Materials (Required)
All readings will be provided through Canvas.
Software: Students are required to use Pro Tools for class assignments, which is available in the SoundTank lab. Students who wish to use Pro Tools on their own computer can choose to purchase an EDU subscription for $9.99/month.
Hardware: Students should have over ear, closed back headphones, such as the Sony MDR 7506, which can also be checked out from the Louis cage. Students must have at least one external hard drive, preferably a second one to act as backup.
