Overview of class
This course is designed to guide you through the process of writing structurally and creatively rewarding, narrative short screenplays that can become producible films. With an eye toward production considerations, we will explore dramatic principles that are applicable to multiple formats of narrative screenwriting. From the initial premise, through character exploration, outlining, drafting, and revising your work, you will engage with potential production challenges of creative decisions. You will develop, outline, write, and rewrite a short film; and give and receive critical feedback on all coursework.
Learning Objectives
Through textbook study, critical reading of screenplays, lecture and discussion, short film screenings, guest speakers, and close analysis of production material, you will gain a well-rounded exploration of the process of writing producible screenplays. You will gain working knowledge of short film story structure, effective dialogue, dramatic conflict, character development, and visual storytelling. Additionally, we will investigate the responsibilities of being a multi-hyphenate (writer-director-producer).
