Overview of class
China America Reel Ecology (CARE) program is a new global arts cinema course that brings together students from Northwestern University and Tongji University's College of Art and Media in Shanghai (China). The CARE program - led by professors and filmmakers JP Sniadecki and Li Xiaofeng - connects six students from each institution to collectively explore the intersection of cinema and ecology in order to produce new co-authored works that explore cinema's capacity to engage and advance ecological understanding. CARE students - six from NU and six from TU - will first form as teams of two and collaborate remotely during the Spring Quarter. Then, in summer 2026, they will convene as a community of 12 students in Evanston/Chicagoland and, collaborating with their paired team member, produce an original media project (film, video, sound, installation, etc). Although these collaborative projects may range in scale and location, they will share an emphasis on experiential, qualitative, and aesthetic responses to our imbrication with the planet. The CARE program will offer access to a cross-cultural community of makers, professional production equipment, and production budget support. Overall, the goals of CARE are to foster transcultural connection between student-artists from both China and the US in order to generate novel approaches to address the global challenge of climate crisis.
