Overview of class

In just over a century since its technical invention, films have evolved from fairground attraction to a truly global medium and a multibillion dollar industry. What is a film? How and why do films capture our imagination and shape the world around us? And what are the stakes of these questions today? This course introduces students to a range of theoretical debates in transnational film and media studies that address these questions. Assigned readings address key concepts and debates that have shaped the fields of film and media studies including the early formalist foundations of the field, realist film theory, feminist theory, psychoanalysis and ideology critique. Screenings draw from a range of historical, national, and generic contexts.
