Overview of class

This seminar explores performance as an experiential mode of research, emphasizing its capacity to open new horizons of knowledge production and meaning making via aesthetic, time-based practice. Through critical readings, performance exercises, and engagement with contemporary artists, students will investigate the intersections of theory and practice, focusing on practice-as-research methodologies. The course fosters reflexive inquiry and creative experimentation, culminating in the design and development of original performance-based research projects that trouble conventional boundaries of artistic and scholarly inquiry. Classes will include seminars to analyze key texts, exploration of case studies and research questions, embodied reflection on the role of aesthetics in critical inquiry, and collaborative studio work to support the development of research pilots based on students' creative practices and research design needs.
