Overview of class
Autoethnography is a qualitative research method that uses deep self-reflection and personal narratives to critically analyze and connect individual experiences to broader cultural, political, and social contexts. It values the researcher's relationships with others and merges autobiographical and ethnographic practices—such as storytelling, fieldwork, reflexivity, and memory—to create vivid, accessible, and emotionally resonant accounts. This method employs "thick descriptions" to illustrate how cultural beliefs, values, and practices shape personal lives. I believe it is essential that we tell our own stories. Much of my research uses autoethnography to investigate and choreograph my lived experiences and share my stories more intimately. This hybrid seminar/studio course will use sounding, moving, speaking, and writing as a choreographic framework to examine how we create and contribute to our ongoing archives, telling our embodied stories—using our bodies as paintbrushes, chisels, and pens. These narratives need not be linear; they are intentionally interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary.
