Overview of class
This section of Comm Studies 101-2 will focus on developing research, analysis, writing, and interactional skills through hands-on experience in communication skills training. We will focus on 9 commonly used interpersonal communication skills (e.g., empathic listening, giving criticism, apologizing, breaking bad news, difficult conversations, offering condolences, etc.). For each, we will develop a theoretical and conceptual foundation and a set of practical guidelines for using the skills. Each week, a subset of students will practice these skills in role plays and then the rest of the class will offer oral and written peer feedback and critique. Grades are based on: performance in the role plays, participation in class, submission of written critiques, and an in-class final exam.
