Overview of class
The Advanced Methods of Teaching Linguistically Diverse Students course is designed for
future educators who will be supporting multilingual students in developing their English
proficiency. This course embraces an additive approach where teachers develop students'
full linguistic repertoire by sustaining multiple languages and literacies. Future educators will
consider language acquisition theories and how they are enacted in the classroom or other
educational spaces. There is a broad focus in the course as future educators may want to
work as content-area educators supporting emergent multilingual students, work in dual
language settings (potentially teaching in multiple languages), or teach English as a world
language.
We will begin by briefly exploring the historical context for language education in the United
States before focusing on the policies and practices that equitably and effectively support
linguistically diverse students. In order to understand and advocate for effective policies and
practices, we will critically examine research and theory related to language acquisition with
a focus on second language acquisition (SLA). Key topics include proficiency levels, modes
of communication, the role of input, strategies to enhance the comprehension of input, focus
on form, the role of output, interpretive communication strategies, negotiation of meaning,
strategies to support meaningful interaction among students, cultivating belonging,
designing complex tasks, technology, family engagement, and assessment systems
(including integrated performance assessment, content vs. language assessment, oral
language, equitable assessment, and assessment-informed teaching).
