Overview of class

Who generates, accesses, and uses social data--and for what purposes? This course explores the ethical and unethical ways social data has been and can be used to promote the individual and social good while equally allowing for the manipulation and exploitation of its users. We will cover: 1) social data's history and definitions over time, 2) social data's usage in marketing/business, academia, media/popular culture, and out-of-school educational institutions, and 3) AI in the present along with its possibilities for the future. Through a combination of case studies and direct analysis/utilization of different social data in class, we will consider the good, the bad, and the frequently complicated implications of what it means to live in a world where social data both connects and disconnects us.
