Overview of class

This introductory course is intended for students with any background or level of experience with

music composition, but the ability to read and write standard musical notation is required for

enrollment. This course offers an introduction to music composition for students of all musical

backgrounds and levels of experience. Through creative projects, listening, analysis, and discussion,

students will explore fundamental elements of composing, including sound, form, rhythm, harmony,

texture, notation, and electronic media. Emphasis is placed on experimentation, developing an

individual artistic voice, and learning composition as a practice of attentive listening and creative

problem-solving. Curiosity, openness to exploration, and a willingness to present and discuss creative

work are essential

Registration Requirements

The ability to read and write standard musical notation is required as a prerequisite.
