Overview of class

This course introduces the practice and study of community music, focusing on its principles and role

in shaping cultural and social dynamics. Students will critically examine how community music can

foster cultural expression, identity, and collective action. Through the study of key theories and case

studies, students will learn how music can engage communities and promote transformative

experiences. Guest speakers working in various areas of community music and engagement will

provide practical insights into how music is used to build connections and address local social needs.

Students will be able to:

Analyze the relationships between music and community.

Evaluate models of community music practice as exemplified in case studies and guest perspectives.

Reflect on and develop musical and personal competencies to design, lead, and improve community-

focused music projects and initiatives.

Marked progress on course objectives and a final project.
