Overview of class

This course is a continuation of GEN MUS 252 (Introduction to Music Theory I), further extending

harmonic studies to include musical forms and analysis.

Registration Requirements

Non-music majors who have completed GEN MUS 252, or who possess basic knowledge of harmony,

are welcome to register. Please contact the instructor for a permission number in order to enroll.

Learning Objectives

In this course, students will continue to build their knowledge, progressing from understanding

harmonies to applying them to actual music. The course will cover musical forms and analyze excerpts

from representative musical works, using logical methods to decode composers' musical language. By

the end of the course, students will develop a comprehensive understanding of music theory, and be

ready to apply this knowledge in the appreciation and creation of music.

Teaching Method

The course includes reading, in-class discussions, and musical excerpt analysis. Homework will consist

of weekly short analyses of pieces related to the class context, as well as midterm and final projects

involving music analysis and short essays to support the points.

Evaluation Method

Assessments will be based on attendance, participation, homework assignments, quizzes, and final

projects.
