Overview of class

This course is a deep dive into the symbiotic relationship between sonic phenomena and play,

whether through analog or digital means. Students will explore how these two elements intersect

both in non-virtual settings like play-party games and children's playground games, as well as in video

games, focusing primarily on issues of embodiment, interactivity, and immersion. Through active

engagement with the interactive material, students will identify and critique social, cultural, and

ideological meaning in sound-game intersections. Assessments include class discussions related to

assigned reading and game "playthroughs," weekly reflection diaries or videos, and a final project. No

prior experience in gaming is needed, but students should be prepared to earnestly participate in the

act of play. The ability to read music is not required to take this course.
