Overview of class

This course introduces students to key concepts, contexts, and ways of listening that will help them

become informed and confident listeners of music. Designed for non-majors with no prior musical

training, the course emphasizes guided listening, historical awareness, and cultural understanding

rather than technical theory.

Students will explore a broad range of Western art music from early traditions through later periods,

learning how musical styles and meanings have evolved over time. Along the way, the course will

connect historical repertoire to music that students are more likely to encounter in contemporary life,

helping them hear relationships across eras and genres.

Class meetings will combine listening activities, short lectures, discussion, and occasional in-class

exercises that encourage students to describe what they hear using clear musical vocabulary.

Students will also engage with live performance through concert reflections and complete creative or

analytical projects that connect listening to personal experience.

No prior musical training or ability to read notation is required.
