Overview of class

This course introduces students to a variety of Latin American popular musics including salsa,

reggaeton, cumbia, son, and more. Students will learn various analytical frameworks for interpreting

and situating each musical style within its sociocultural context, drawing upon methods from

ethnomusicology, cultural studies, media studies, and so on. We will discuss the ways musical

practice intersects with larger ideological and political projects such as multiculturalism, folklorism,

nationalism, and diaspora. Students will be expected to practice engaged listening to recorded and

live performances during and outside of class. Assessments include short biweekly listening journals,

attendance and written reflection of at least one live musical performance, oral presentations, and a

final project. Previous musical training is not required for this course, but some level of Spanish

speaking and comprehension is strongly recommended.

Registration Requirements

Readings and other supplemental materials will be available on CANVAS in lieu of a textbook, but

students will be expected to attend at least one musical performance or event and are responsible for

the associated expenses.
