Overview of class
In this introductory course, we will approach music as a cultural practice inseparable from its
sociopolitical context(s). We will cover primarily (but not exclusively) western genres, from classical to
pop to jazz and beyond, and will explore how and why musicians express themselves by combining
basic technical discussions of musical terminology with critical analyses of various historical
conditions. Sample thematic units will include Music and Identity, Music and Migration, and Music
and Religion. The ability to read music is not required.
Class Materials (Required)
All materials will be made available through Canvas. Students will not be required to purchase
