Overview of class

This course provides an overview of how social scientists study human behavior and society. It will introduce students to the different stages of the research process: literature review, research question formulation, research design, data collection, analysis, and presentation of findings. It will focus primarily on the initial stages of this process, emphasizing the links between theory and research; the structuring of inquiry and ethical issues involved; and quantitative and qualitative modes of observation (survey research, experiments, field research). It will include practical applications as students will learn to design research instruments and conduct basic data analysis.

The course aims to help students understand how to conduct a research project and how to evaluate research claims made by others. Assessment methods include application-focused assignments and a mid-term examination.
