Overview of class

The course aims to equip students with the skills to:

Analyze data and draw meaningful conclusions related to research questions.
Critically read and evaluate social science research employing quantitative methods.
Students will learn how to assess both experimental and non-experimental research. Additionally, they will gain hands-on experience in graphical data analysis, summarizing data with descriptive statistics, testing hypotheses, and making predictions based on real-world data.

Although no specific statistical software is required, all examples and exercises are designed to be completed using Microsoft Excel.

Registration Requirements

Attendance at section sessions (listed as a lab in CAESAR) is mandatory. These sessions are designed to review lecture material and allow students to ask questions for clarification. Teaching Assistants (TAs) may also explore certain topics in greater depth than in lectures to help students develop a solid understanding of the course content. Section discussions focus on applying class concepts to real-world data.

Evaluation Method

Problem sets, Attendance and Participation, Midterm Exam, Final Exam

Class Materials (Required)

The main resource for this class will be the lecture notes. If I don't teach it, I won't test it....it's that simple. Should you desire a formal text, the following is a good option:

Introduction to the Practice of Statistics, Sixth Edition, by Moore and McCabe, Freeman Publishing. (you can also use the 5th or 7th editions)
