Overview of class
The course offers a cultural history of French song since the advent of phonography. We will listen to songs performed by prominent singers, who sometimes were or still are songwriters, including Édith Piaf, Barbara, Georges Brassens, Jacques Brel, Serge Gainsbourg, Rachid Taha, Abdel malik, Stromae, Christine and the Queens… We will listen to them and comment on their texts and performances to the light of their historical and social context, with a focus on questions on gender, sexuality, race, and class as well as their intersections.
